The tyranny of busy-ness
"I've always been busy but I've never felt like a fire alarm is going off, like I do now."
That's what a client said to me last week and I knew exactly what she meant.
We all seem to be working fast and furiously, there's way too much to do and everything is an emergency. Why is that?
Has it always been like this or is it a recent development?
How do you slow it down?
Any ideas or thoughts would be most helpful to all of us, I'm sure.

It's very true - as time goes on I'm getting busier and busier. It's great but it's exhausting!
It seems it's gotten even busier now that I've announced a November vacation! :)

I've definitely been feeling the pinch of busyness lately... but one of the things that I keep reminding myself is that stressing out about the busyness isn't going to get any work done. So I still make time to ease into my days, reading a good (and NOT design-related) book on the porch as I have my tea and cereal, and I'm trying (and not doing as well as I'd like) to make sure that exercise, yoga and snuggling with My Man are all important parts of my day.
If I'm relaxed, I work better. I just have to keep reminding myself of that.

There's a great article in this month's Atlantic magazine about multi-tasking, and how it reduces our ability to perform EITHER (any?) of the six things we're all trying to do at once. The implication? We can do more by doing less--at least, at one time. I'm giving it a try.
