On my way to a networking event the other day, there was a woman in the elevator with me and I knew she was attending the same event because I overheard her asking the doorman a question about it.
I smiled and told her that's where I was going too.
"Oh really," she said, "And what do you do?"
Knowing that this event was for small business owners, I said, "I help small business owners grow their business. What do you do?"
And she said, "Well, I'm a small business owner and I do video production."
I've said that before but no one has ever essentially taken my cue that way. She instantly identified herself someone I might be able to help, establishing a connection between us and planting the seed for continuing a conversation, which we will be doing next week when we have coffee.
It just goes to show you that networking can occur anywhere. Always be prepared to talk about what you do and who you serve.
